BC BS NC North Carolina

According to the American Cancer Society, finding and removing polyps in the colon before they become cancerous is one of the most effective ways to prevent colon cancer. And when colorectal cancers are detected at an early, localized stage, the five-year survival rate is 90%.

This month, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) is launching a phone campaign encouraging members to get colon cancer screenings. We promote preventive care and screenings to help improve our members’ overall health, and to help them catch health problems early, when these issues are most treatable.

Automated calls will:

  • Include a response component
  • Assess possible barriers to screenings
  • Provide information and education on the importance of getting colon cancer screenings

We will make approximately 50,000 calls to members on individual plans (including Marketplace plans) and members of fully-insured groups. These members will be identified as:

  • Between the ages of 50 – 75
  • Due or overdue for a preventive colon cancer screening (according to our claims records)

Calls will not be made to:

  • Members on the State Health Plan or Federal Employee Program
  • Members in self-funded groups
  • Members who previously opted out of Blue Cross NC’s outreach program
